    Anatoly Yakovenko's Proof of History whitepaper

    Solana Labs' own history of the project says that in November 2017 Anatoly Yakovenko published a whitepaper describing Proof of History, a way for computers that do not trust each other to keep time. No copy dated November 2017 has been found. The earliest dated trace is the whitepaper repository, whose first commits on December 12, 2017 hold a draft titled "Loom: High performance blockchain", and by early February 2018 loomprotocol.com hosted a v0.8.5 PDF titled "Loom: A new architecture for a high performance blockchain".

    Loom renames itself Solana

    On March 27, 2018, the project's X account, which had posted as @loomprotocol, announced: "FYI, Loom is now Solana. Update your mental rolodex!" Within the hour a commit titled "Rename project: silk -> solana" renamed Silk, the open-source Rust implementation of Loom. The v0.4.0 release notes of March 31 said the team had renamed the project "to avoid confusion with the Ethereum-based Loom Network", in homage to Solana Beach, California.

    Solana creates the Mainnet Beta genesis block

    Solana's Mainnet Beta genesis configuration records a creation time of March 16, 2020, 14:29:00 UTC, and the network still returns that time for slot 0. Its hash, 5eykt4UsFv8P8NJdTREpY1vzqKqZKvdpKuc147dw2N9d, is the genesis hash mainnet nodes report today. Solana's June 2020 newsletter said: "Since we created our genesis block and used it to launch mainnet beta on March 16th, it has been quite the journey".

    SPL Token docs add a non-fungible token recipe

    On October 14, 2020, a commit titled "Add NTF documentation" added an example to the SPL Token docs showing how to create a non-fungible token: create a token, mint one, then disable further minting. Nineteen minutes later Solana co-founder Raj Gokal posted that "you can create non-fungible tokens on @solana now", linking to the example. Two days later the LSD token, which Bonfida went on to auction as an NFT, was created with the same steps.

    Bonfida mints LSD, the NFT it later auctioned on Solible

    On October 16, 2020, the wallet that later issued Bonfida's Solible NFTs created the LSD token: a new SPL mint holding exactly one token, with further minting disabled 13 minutes later. Those steps match the non-fungible token recipe that Solana Labs had added to the SPL Token docs two days earlier. On October 20 Bonfida called $LSD "the first NFT created on @solana and listed on @ProjectSerum", and on October 25 it said the auction on its Solible exchange had sold it for 900 SRM. Solana then posted that "the first NFT on Solana has officially sold".

    Bonfida launches Solible, an NFT exchange on Serum

    On October 22, 2020, Bonfida announced Solible, which it called "the first #NFT exchange on @ProjectSerum and @solana", a day after inviting followers to guess the name. Bonfida used it to auction LSD, the NFT it had minted on October 16: on October 23 it posted the current bid with a link to bid at solible.com, and the auction ran on a Serum LSD/SRM market opened on October 17. Solana's account posted on launch day that Bonfida had "just launched the first NFT exchange on @ProjectSerum called ‘Solible’".

    Bonfida mints the 'Satoshi Nakamoto' NFT, sold for 450 SRM

    On October 23, 2020, the wallet behind Bonfida's Solible NFTs created a single-token mint with LSD's recipe, 9 decimals and no further minting, which the Solana Explorer named "Satoshi Nakamoto" in November 2020. Minutes later the account that ran Solible's markets opened a Serum market pairing it with SRM. Two days earlier the same wallet had created a run of "Satoshi" tokens, named in the same explorer change, such as "Satoshi GB" and "Satoshi OG". On October 25 Bonfida posted that "Satoshi Nakamoto" was the second NFT sold on Solible, for 450 SRM.

    Bonfida mints a DeceFi NFT for Solible

    On October 25, 2020, the Solible wallet created an NFT for the DeceFi project with zero decimals and a single token, the format most later Solana NFTs used; LSD and the Satoshi tokens had used 9 decimals. Bonfida announced "New @decefi_official #NFT available on solible.com" a little over two hours later. Unlike LSD, its mint authority was never disabled, so the supply is not fixed on-chain.

    Bonfida mints Bitcoin Tram, a redeemable NFT

    On October 27, 2020, the Solible wallet created a zero-decimal token, minted ten of it and disabled further minting; the Solana Explorer named it "Bitcoin Tram" in November 2020, and minutes after the mint was created the account that ran Solible's markets opened a Serum market pairing it with USDC. On November 2 Bonfida listed a Bitcoin Tram NFT on Solible in partnership with @bitcoinorghk, saying it could be redeemed for a Bitcoin Tram model mailed to the holder's door, and took bids in USDC. Bonfida called it "the first redeemable #NFT on @solana and @ProjectSerum", and on November 6 it posted that the auction had ended. The issuing wallet burned three of the tokens later that day and two more on November 8, leaving the five that exist today.

    Serum socks go on sale as redeemable NFTs on Solible

    On January 12, 2021, a zero-decimal token with five units was created, and within a minute the account that ran Solible's markets opened a Serum market pairing it with SRM. The next day Bonfida announced "@ProjectSerum socks are now available on Solible", linking to that market, and on February 5 it posted that all Serum socks had been sold. Bonfida later explained that holders could "redeem, hodl or resell the NFT".

    Bonfida auctions a DOGE painting as a redeemable NFT

    On February 9, 2021, the Solible wallet created a single-token NFT for a $DOGE painting that Bonfida said had been seen on Sam Bankman-Fried's desk, and Bonfida put it up for auction on Solible against USDC. Bonfida said the auction was for the physical painting itself and that the proceeds would go to charity. On February 14 Bonfida reported that the painting had sold for about 1,300 USDC and that the proceeds had been given to the FTX Foundation.

    Kreechures begins generating the "first" Solana NFT collection

    Kreechures posted at 15:40 UTC on March 26, 2021 that generation of its NFTs was starting that day. At 17:26:47 UTC the project's minting wallet created the 0-decimal token that opens Deck 1, which makes Kreechures the "first" Solana NFT collection by opening mint. Deck 1 ran to number 2070 on October 7, 2021, and Deck 2 was minted separately from December 14 to December 23, 2021.

    Solarians begin minting as 9-decimal pre-Metaplex tokens

    The first Solarian, from an on-chain generative robot collection, was minted on April 7, 2021 as a pre-Metaplex token: a 9-decimal token with a supply of one and no on-chain name, image or edition record, two months before the Metaplex NFT standard launched. Solarians used a bonding curve that took the mint price from 4.8 SOL to 35 SOL. On August 3, 2021 the team switched new mints to the Metaplex format and gave the earlier tokens Metaplex metadata; Solarian #9900 was minted on August 31, 2021.

    SolPunks go on sale as pre-Metaplex tokens

    SolPunks went on sale in May 2021 as plain SPL tokens, pre-Metaplex tokens with no metadata: the archived solpunks.com buying page asked for 3 SOL per SolPunk and said a token would arrive in the buyer's wallet within 5 minutes, and the minting wallet made 3,465 of them between May 7 and June 9. From June 9 to 10 the same team wallet made 3,439 tokens through a new minting program, and 834 of the 877 wallets that received them had received May tokens; this re-issue to May holders is on-chain only, and no team announcement of a re-mint has been found. On June 10 at 13:44 UTC the team posted, in its own words, "We have just deployed a new minting system" and that it "also fixes failed TX issues". The program's tokens, the SolPunks collection known today, were upgraded in place with Metaplex metadata on July 21 to 22, 2021 (UTC), which the team announced on July 22.

    Solana Monkey Business Gen1 released

    Solana Monkey Business (SMB) released Gen1, a set of four space-themed monke tokens, traded on Serum, on June 2, 2021. At 14:02 UTC it posted 'The Space Monkeys' lineup, from 2,500 Monkanicians at 2.5 USDC to 50 Monkaliens at 200 USDC, and the first buy order on the Monkanician market followed at 14:03:45 UTC. That evening SMB posted that six MonkAliens had been claimed and that holders of the full set had unlocked a MonKing NFT.

    Metaplex developers mint Pit and Viper on the protocol's launch day

    At 16:00:02 UTC on June 2, 2021, about half a minute before Metaplex's launch announcement, a creator wallet minted Pit and Viper and made it a master edition with a maximum of 10 prints. It was the first metadata account created on the Token Metadata program Metaplex launched with, although its developers had minted test NFTs, including an earlier 'Pit & Viper', on pre-launch deployments in April and May 2021. The NFT's own metadata calls it 'the first NFT created on the Metaplex protocol' and says it shows the protocol creators. Two editions were printed: one went to the second creator wallet on launch day, and one sold for 101 SOL in a September 2021 auction promoted by Metaplex developers @redacted_j and @baalazamon, won by the Thugbirdz creator wallet.

    At 03:34 UTC on June 15, 2021, the evening of June 14 in the US, the SolPunks team posted "Minting for SolPunks is officially over! Over 5000 SolPunks minted in the last 24 hours!" The last buyer-signed mint through the SolPunks program came at 03:46:06 UTC. The team wallet minted 17 more tokens on June 15 and 16, and the SolPunks collection known today holds 9,988 tokens.

    SSBxSolPunks minted for top SolPunks holders

    Between 17:33:56 and 17:50:04 UTC on June 25, 2021, the SolPunks team wallet minted 310 SSBxSolPunk tokens through the SolPunks program, and 12 more tokens followed between June 30 and July 1, the last of them SSBxSolPunk #313. On June 12 the team had said that holders of more than 10 SolPunks at the time of its June 22 AMA with SatoshiStreetBets would receive a limited 'SatoshiStreetBets' SolPunk. On July 6 it described SSBxSolpunks as "a separate collection airdropped to the biggest holders as a reward": 77 Aliens, 45 Apes, 49 Zombies and 139 humans.

    FRAKT, a 10,000-piece generative fractal art collection, minted at 0.5 SOL in July 2021. On-chain, FRAKT's art-purchase program recorded its earliest purchase on June 6, 2021, at 21:59:11 UTC, before the July public mint. The team posted that about 2,000 had been minted by July 20 and half by July 24, and announced '10,000 #FRAKTS ALL MINTED OUT' at 13:12 UTC on July 25. A collector who minted overnight wrote that it 'sold out overnight'.

    SolPunks get on-chain metadata

    On July 5, 2021, the SolPunks team wrote that the collection did not yet have metadata on chain and would "implement the 'official' standard at a later date", adding that there was no metadata standard when its minting began. At 00:56 UTC on July 22 it announced "SolPunks - now with on-chain metadata" and said it was converting all existing SolPunks to the new standard, and at 12:33 UTC it posted that the process was done and "every tokens are updated". The tokens were upgraded in place, with Metaplex metadata and a master edition added to the existing mints; SolPunk #4068 was upgraded at 23:11:38 UTC on July 21, and SolPunk #5792, minted on June 10, at 00:13:43 UTC on July 22.

    ApeShit Social Club launches a day late

    ApeShit Social Club counted down to a July 22, 2021 launch, then postponed it that evening until the next day. It launched on July 23 and reported nearly a third of its apes adopted in the first 12 hours. The team posted on July 28 UTC (July 27, US time) that all apes were minted.

    Solarians switch new mints to the Metaplex NFT format

    On August 3, 2021, Solarians stopped minting 9-decimal tokens: #5766, minted at 07:42 UTC, was the last of them, and #5767, minted at 07:52 UTC, was a zero-decimal token with Metaplex metadata. Between 07:26 and 14:57 UTC the team gave the earlier 9-decimal Solarians Metaplex metadata, and at 20:21 UTC it posted "Your beloved Solarians are now showing up in @phantom". The 9-decimal tokens could not take a master edition, the record that locks a Metaplex NFT's supply at one, and the new mints only got one in April 2022. In 2022 the team minted zero-decimal replacements, and from April 27 holders could swap their 9-decimal tokens for them; about a third had been swapped by October 2026.

    Solana Mees mint begins

    Solana Mees, a collection of 20,000 3D voxel characters, minted its earliest token on-chain at 22:34 UTC on August 3, 2021, and sold to its earliest outside buyer at 00:30 UTC on August 4. Each SolMee was made as a master edition kept by the team wallet, with a printed edition #1 sent to the buyer, who is listed as a 50% co-creator; of 20,185 master editions, 20,184 are still held by the team wallet. The team paused minting on August 4 over transaction verification issues, posted that it was live again on August 5, and announced a sell-out on October 8, 2021.

    Degen Ape Academy sells out on its second attempt

    Degenerate Ape Academy's first drop, which began around 00:00 UTC on August 14, 2021 (the evening of August 13, US time), broke down under overloaded servers, and a minting exploit was reported. The team relaunched at 5 PM Pacific on August 14, posted 'We are live!' at 01:54 UTC on August 15, and announced at 02:57 UTC that it had sold out in 8 minutes, all on the evening of August 14, US time. Its official site gives the date as August 14 (US time) and the price as 6 SOL for 10,000 apes. A 2022 account by Bardstocks says the relaunch used a mint tool built in about 12 hours by two Metaplex developers, the first version of Candy Machine.

    Sollamas mint sells out and is oversold

    Sollamas created its Gen1 llamas on-chain from 14:19 UTC on August 15, 2021, then opened its 4 SOL sale at 12:57 UTC on August 17 and posted that it had sold out at 13:13 UTC. At 13:40 UTC the team said it had been oversold and would refund the extra SOL; the chain holds 7,176 Gen1 tokens for 6,532 distinct numbers, with 604 numbers issued two to four times. From August 18 the team rewrote the Gen1 metadata into gravestones rather than burning the tokens, began minting Gen2 at 08:00:44 UTC, and released Tuco as a separate print series.

    Sollamas turns Gen1 into gravestones and mints Gen2

    On August 18, 2021, after its oversold sale, Sollamas began minting Gen2 llamas at 08:00:44 UTC under a new update authority and rewrote the metadata of its Gen1 llamas into gravestones instead of burning them. Tuco, an unlimited print series created that morning, was cast as the hunter, and that evening the team posted that 'the entire generation 1 was hunted down by Tuco' and that the NFTs would later be locked. Buyers who overpaid were offered refunds, and on August 24 the team said about 2,500 llamas would be burned to bring supply to 7,500, a burn that has not been found on-chain.

    SolSea announced as an open Solana marketplace

    All.Art announced SolSea on August 26, 2021, pitching it as the first open NFT marketplace on Solana, with built-in minting. SolSea went live at 06:25 UTC on September 4 but soon reported an unstable mainnet connection, and on September 5 it went into maintenance to investigate a large number of fake listings. It said it would not switch back on until major collections were verified, and on September 10 it reopened on Solana's devnet for testing only. When it returned to mainnet is not pinned down here.

    Rox, the ROX collection, opened its public launch on August 29, 2021. The launch was briefly taken down, then the team said its minter was working through 4,355 queued orders. A day later it counted 3,847 minted of a 6,030 supply.

According to Bear Labs (2022), the birds sold in tiers at 1, 2 and 3 SOL, and the collection hit an all-time high of 120 SOL on October 4.

    Metaplex Auction House program deployed to mainnet

    The Metaplex Auction House program, a decentralized sales protocol for NFT marketplaces, was deployed to Solana mainnet at 02:59 UTC on October 29, 2021. Two minutes later its code was merged into the Metaplex repository, in a pull request by Jarry Xiao. Metaplex still described the Auction House launch as upcoming in January 2022, so this marks the program's arrival on-chain rather than its public release.

    SolWhips, a collection of 2,222 car NFTs for a planned game, opened its mint on November 1, 2021; at 18:54 UTC the team posted that the mint was 'just over an hour' away, and it posted the mint link at 20:41 UTC.     Taiyo Robotics minted with almost no notice late on November 21, 2021 (US time), calling itself '100% a rug' in posts that it later said were meant to put off bots.     Magic Eden announces a move to open listings

    Magic Eden announced on December 20, 2021 that it was moving toward an open listing model, after a teaser on December 17, and invited users to its first town hall on Twitter Spaces. The plan had two phases, rolling out over late December and into 2022: community flagging of collections, then collection badges and open listings. Open-listed collections would carry warnings and would not be featured or searchable on the site. On December 23 Magic Eden posted that collection flagging, the first phase, was live.

    Monkey Kingdom suspends its Baepes mint after a Discord phishing attack

    On December 21, 2021, as Monkey Kingdom's Baepes presale began at 10:00pm HKT (14:00 UTC), a compromised Discord webhook posted a phishing link in its announcements channel. Monkey Kingdom posted that its Discord had been hacked, suspended the public sale and all future mints, and said the webhooks came from a compromise at Grape Protocol; Grape said one of its admins had been hacked a week earlier, affecting Monkey Kingdom and Fractal. Collectors that day reported nearly 7,000 SOL stolen, and Cointelegraph reported the losses as $1.3 million, citing Monkey Kingdom. By December 24 Monkey Kingdom said it had moved 1,532 SOL into a Compensation 2 wallet and finished the first 1,316 compensation requests.

    Belugies and Whales Nation held an 888-piece, 0.2 SOL collaborative mint on Magic Eden's Launchpad on December 28, 2021, pledging all proceeds to charity. Belugies had announced 19:00 UTC, while Magic Eden's post that day gave 19:57 UTC for the presale and 20:00 UTC for the public sale. Magic Eden said afterward that, after it limited wallets, the 888 NFTs went to exactly 888 wallets. Belugies, a family team with a 14-year-old artist, had also pledged all its December royalties to charity.
